Botox Treatment: The Purpose
Botulinum toxin type A, more commonly known as Botox, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria and its related species. Regular Botox treatment blocks the nerve signals and causes temporary paralysis, which relaxes the muscles and reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles.
Botox typically gets injected into the glabellar region between the eyebrows used for treating moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles known as "crow's feet". Check out our Botox and Dermal Fillers page for more information.
These prominent wrinkles result from repetitive facial movements and tend to worsen with the onset of age. However, age is not the only factor at play, as chronic stress can induce high cortisol levels. The presence of cortisol, the body's stress hormone, can break down collagen and elastin in the skin, accelerating the formation of wrinkles. Regular Botox treatment reduces and removes the presence of facial wrinkles, providing a rejuvenated and youthful appearance
Botox Treatment: The Options
Botulinum toxin is the substance created from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is available in four different generic brand options which include Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau®.
Botox®: Most commonly used in Botox treatment that is costly and usually takes about three to five days post-treatment for the results to appear (though it can take up to two weeks for the final effect to be visible). One Botox treatment can last up to four months. You can find out more about our treatments on our Botox and Dermal Fillers.
Dysport®: The effects of Dysport may show up sooner than Botox (Within 24 hours), and costs are significantly less. Although Dysport should last up to four months, some studies have shown that it may not last that long.
Xeomin®: Xeomin contains no additives and does not require refrigeration. People are less likely to become resistant to Xeomin injections because of the purity of the substance. Xeomin takes five to seven days for effects to show and lasts a similar amount of time to Botox and Dysport.
Jeuveau®: Jeuveau is the newest contender on the block and was approved exclusively for cosmetic use in February 2019. Due to its novelty, clinical data for the product is limited, but trials have shown that Jeuveau is similar to Botox concerning effectiveness. Patients see results for their botox treatment within three to five days and last for three to six months before another appointment is necessary.
Deciding on which type of Botulinum toxin will be right for you can be a daunting task and could deter you from undergoing Botox treatment at all due to indecision.
Fortunately, you are in safe and knowledgeable hands; Dr Storm is a qualified Botox and Dermal filler specialist and has a Masters in Sports Medicine. He has 25 years of medical experience in South Africa and has worked as a cosmetic and aesthetic doctor for over ten years.
Dr Storm will assess your specific needs and determine which Botulinum toxin and botox treatment is best for you.
Botox Treatment: The Procedure
Your first step towards getting botox treatment will be a pre-botox treatment consultation. You and your doctor will discuss your situation and recent medical history and advise that you cease using any muscle relaxants, allergy medications or sleeping aids for two weeks before the. It would be best to avoid alcohol consumption for a week before and cease the use of blood thinners several days before your procedure to reduce the risk of any bleeding or bruising. Your doctor will also walk you through the botox treatment procedure and recovery process.
The majority of patients feel little to no pain during the botox treatment procedure and often do not require any anaesthesia. However, your doctor might use ice and vibration anaesthesia, which uses massage to reduce discomfort or apply topical anaesthesia to numb the area beforehand. The actual Botox treatment procedure takes only a few minutes and could even receive treatment in a doctor’s office. Your doctor will use a thin needle to inject small amounts of Botulinum toxin into the specific areas of skin or directly into the muscles. The number of injections required can vary and usually depend on several factors, including the extent of the area undergoing fillers and botox treatment.
Botox Treatment: The Recovery Process
There is no significant recovery process or any downtime for Botulinum toxin injections because there is no surgical wound to care for after receiving botox treatment. You may continue normal activities almost immediately and even resume your skin regimen and wear makeup after Botox treatment. You must, however, avoid certain activities for a few days post-treatment, including:
- Lying on your back
- Scratching, rubbing or massaging the site of injection
- Applying pressure or heat on the treatment area
- Exercising or time in the sauna
- Sun exposure
- Any other activities that may cause flushing
Engaging in any of these activities may cause the Botulinum toxin to migrate to another area of your face. If this happens, you could experience facial weakness or even facial drooping.
With a variety of Botox and filler treatment procedures to choose from, we have the perfect solution just for you.
